The Junos are this Sunday at GM Place. It's usually an award show I enjoy because I like to support Canadian music but this year I could give less than a shit. It took me awhile to figure out why and then I heard the radio promo and it hit me. Nickelback. With all the the great Canadian music to come out this year, Nickelback's 'Gotta Be Somebody' is front and centre in the promo and really the only song you can hear. They're up for 5 awards and since it's in Vancouver there's a good chance they'll win most of them if not all of them. And I'm just not sure I could stomach watching it.
There was a time where I was a defender of their music but that was a long long time ago. It seems like every other year they trot out the same tired old song and dance and radio stations and their fans just eat it up while the rest of our ears have to suffer. And it's not just in Canada they'll also get tons of play in the State's. It seems like Europe is the only place with good taste cause any time they play festivals there, they get booed of stage.
Granted, to each their own. You can't help what you like but I don't know more than a handful of people who admit to liking them. Why are they selling all these records? Why are they winning all these awards? And why do they have to ruin a perfectly good night for Canadian music?
