OK, it wasn’t the best but it wasn’t bad, no matter what the Twitterverse says. UFC 111: St. Pierre Vs. Hardy was a nice, well-rounded pay-per-view. There were knockouts, submissions, decisions, high drama, and even a bit of controversy. But not everybody liked it.

St. Pierre Vs. Hardy – Welterweight Title

After the main event, GSP stood in the octagon with Joe Rogan and apologized for his performance, then at the post-fight press conference he again apologized for his performance. Not cause he didn't win, not cause he wasn't dominant, but because he didn't finish Dan Hardy. Then Dana White came to the podium and talked about how his Twitter was "blowing-up with a lot of negative stuff… about the main event." What? Was I watching a different pay-per-view? Sure, GSP was taking down Hardy with ease (Hardy didn't stuff a single takedown and only delayed one for about two seconds) but when he got him down he was looking to finish and Hardy found ways to escape. That's in sharp contrast to the second fight on the card when Jon Fitch dominated Ben Saunders in a similar fashion but never looked for the finish even though Saunders didn't have an answer for anything. I understand Georges is unhappy with his performance but it wasn't something to apologize to the fans for because it gave us an interesting duel on the ground and a new respect for Dan Hardy's toughness (GSP had Gumby… I mean Hardy in an armbar and later a kimura and both times it looked like he was gonna break Hardy's arm). As far as the Twitterverse blowing-up Dana's account with a lot of negative stuff, this isn't boxing, kickboxing, or Muay Thai this is MMA. You get to see knees and kicks and punches and elbows but takedowns and submissions are a huge part of the sport and have been since day one. If you want kickboxing, watch K-1.

I give it 3.5 Rachelle Leahs out of 5.

Mir Vs. Carwin – Interim Heavy Weight Title

The co-main event saw Frank Mir push Shane Carwin to his physical limits by keeping the former NCAA division II champion in the octagon longer than any other opponent before him… OK, maybe this wasn't his physical limit but Mir did last almost twice as long as anyone else has… which is still under four minutes. Going into this fight I had no idea what to expect other than a short match and when the two stood toe-to-toe I noticed how much bigger Mir had gotten and I figured that would be huge for him. When Mir fought Brock Lesnar for the title at UFC 100 last July, he was tipping the scales at around 240lbs which is pretty big until you consider both Lesnar and Carwin have to cut weight to make the 265lbs weight limit. He added some extra muscle for his fight against Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 in Decamber and added even more for this one. The bell rang and after a short feeling out process, Carwin went for a takedown that looked like it got stuffed and then pressed Mir against the cage. There were a couple short knees thrown then Carwin landed a left hook, then an uppercut, then another one, and another, and another… he hit him with a lot of uppercuts. Mir went to the ground took a couple more shots, turtled, and it was over. Then Brock came into the cage, called the belt that Carwin was wearing "fake" (I would of enjoyed it more if he stole Roy Nelson's line and called it the TV Title, but that's just the wrestling fan in me), and now we the main event for July (though it would be way better in June) that we should've had last November.

I give it 4.5 Rachelle Leahs out of 5 (I was gonna give it just a four but I really like seeing Frank Mir get punched in the face).

Miller Vs. Bocek

Also on the card was Canadian lightweight Mark Bocek losing to Jersey native Jim Miller by a unanimous decision much to the delight of the hometown crowd. It was a good fight. Bocek clearly won the second round and should've have put him away with a rear naked choke. The other two rounds could have gone either way and they obviously went to Miller.

This one gets 2 Rachelle Leahs out of 3 (Out of 3 cause it was a 3 round fight).

Fitch Vs. Saunders

This was suppose to be a fight between the two best welterweights in the world who aren’t French Canadian and don’t wear tiny bicycle shorts to the octagon, instead we got Ben Saunders bites off more than he can chew. Didn’t like this fight and I mentioned why earlier. It’s one thing not to finish a fight but it’s another to not even look for the finish. Jon Fitch is like the New Jersey Devils of MMA.

1 Rachelle Leah out of 3 just cause we got to see her 3 times.

Palhares Vs. Drawl

There was a bit of controversy in one of the prelim fights (that they showed after the Mir/Carwin fight) when Rousimar Palhares submitted Tomasz Drwal with a heel hook and didn't release the hold right away when Drwal tapped. The New Jersey State Athletic Board gave Palhares a 90-day suspension, which isn’t much, but I think is a load of BS. This was completely the ref's fault. He was totally out of position and took way too long to get to the other side of the octagon to get Palhares to release the hold. We've seen fighters in the past (look-up Babalu) not let go when the ref steps in but this was not the case. The fighters are taught not to stop until the ref does step in and he did just that.

These guys get 2.5 Rachelle Leahs out of 3 for using a heel hook (never see enough leg submissions anymore) and creating more attention than a prelim fight normally gets.

All in all a decent pay-per-view despite (for some) the lack of action in the main event. The next UFC card is Fight Night 21: Florian Vs. Gomi live for free on Spike.
