Two weeks ago there was dancing and last week there was a battle royal. It’s been a tough couple of weeks for MMA, but leave it up to the little guys to come up big.
Banuelos Vs Jorgensen
This is a rematch of their back-and-forth battle from WEC 41 and they start right where they left off in June. Banuelos does a good job early with some left hooks and drops Jorgensen about midway through the first. Jorgensen was able to recover and almost caught him with an armbar. They continue the pace in the second where Jorgensen landed several rights that bloodied Banuelos’ nose and later knocked him down. Banuelos recovered and landed a nice combination to end the round. Jorgensen continued to hold the edge in the third. He drops Banuelos again, lands some shots on the ground and goes for a choke. Banuelos gets out of it and they get in a final exchange before the horn. Jorgensen gets the well-deserved unanimous decision.
No Arianny for this one (but we get Rogan, Goldberg, and Buffer, what were they thinking?!) so we're rating the fights out of Brittney Palmers. 2.5 Brittneys out of 3 for a great opening bout.
Njokuani Vs. Roller
Mike Goldberg called this the, “classic striker versus grappler matchup,” right out the outset and chalk this one in the win column for the grappler. Njokuani had no answer for Roller’s wrestling. Roller was able to get the takedown early, advance his position, get the hooks in, and eventually the rear naked choke at 3:21 of the first.
2 out of 3 Brittneys.
Brown Vs. Gamburyan
There were a couple good exchanges early on, but “The Manvil” caught the former champ with a right and this was over pretty quick. Manny Gamburyan with the TKO over Mike Brown 2:22 into the first. Could this be the next contender for the Featherweight Crown?
2 out of 3 Brittneys for a vicious uppercut and upset.
Henderson Vs. Cerrone – Lightweight Title
This one also ended pretty quick and definitely wasn’t the classic they had last October at WEC 43. Mike Goldberg talked about how Cerrone wanted to get into “full ignition mode much earlier in this rematch”... Yeah, that didn’t happen. “The Cowboy” landed a leg kick and that was about it. Henderson took control against the cage, landed a ton of knees, got the takedown, landed some ground and pound, and locked in the guillotine at 1:57 of the first.
3 Brittneys out of 5. It was good, but their first fight was great. Some might think it’s not fair to compare the two fights but that’s light pretending the first one didn’t happen.
Aldo Vs. Faber – Featherweight Title
This was a true passing of the torch. Jose Aldo defended his title in dominant fashion over the man who held that very belt longer than anyone else (at least for now). The first round was a feeling-out process with both men landing some shots but nothing really of significance. Aldo put it into gear in the second landing leg-kick after leg-kick (Faber’s legs got messed-up in this one). He continued it in the third and in the forth he knocked “The Kid” down and got him into a crucifix. In the fifth, Aldo slowed down the pace to secure the victory. Faber tried to muster a comeback but his legs didn’t have anything left. Aldo gets the unanimous decision victory.
3 out of 5 Brittneys for starting well but fizzling at the end.
The lines between WEC and the UFC got a little blurred for this on. The fighters wore the blue gloves and fought in the smaller octagon, but it was the UFC announce team and did you notice the lack of “WEC” on those blue gloves and also the website that was displayed on the cage padding? Dana White said after the fight that it had to do with airing the prelims on Spike and a bunch of contract stuff between Spike, Versus, and WEC but it makes you think that this may have just been a dress rehearsal to see if the lighter guys can carry a pay-per-view and (depending on the numbers) we’ll see an end to those blue gloves and the smaller cage sooner rather than later.
No MMA next week, but for lovers of the sweet science there is the Mayweather-Mosley bout for the WBA Welterweight Title next Saturday (cause of course that’s the fight everyone wants to see). The next MMA card is May 8th with UFC 113: Machida Vs. Shogun 2 in Montreal.
