UFC mini… I mean WEC makes their pay-per-view debut this Saturday with WEC 48: Aldo Vs. Faber. It’s a good looking card on paper with “The California Kid” trying to regain what was his in his hometown-ish, a rematch of what some call the best fight of 2009, and another former champion trying to get back on top.
In the main event, WEC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo defends his title for the first time against the man who held that same title for over two and a half years Urijah Faber. Both are well-rounded strikers; while Aldo throws more kicks and KO’d his last six opponents, Faber’s heavy handed and throws his knees and elbows around with the best of them. On the ground, Aldo is a Jiu-Jitsu black belt while “The Kid” is a good wrestler and has submitted a couple Jiu-Jitsu black belts. The biggest question going into this one has to be: When is someone too old to be called “The Kid”? I mean really, he’s 30. We don’t call Ken Griffey Jr. “The Kid” anymore and haven’t since he got traded to the Reds. He’s gotta find a new nickname like “The California Dude” or something. Also, some may be wondering whether Faber still has what it takes considering this is his second crack at the belt since losing it.
The co-main event will see Ben “Smooth” Henderson defend his Lightweight Title against Donald “The Cowboy” Cerrone. This is a rematch of their absolute classic last October at WEC 43 for the Interim Lightweight Championship. It was a five round unanimous decision for Henderson that could’ve easily gone the other way with all the submissions Cerrone had him in. Sherdog called it the Fight of the Year for 2009 and if the fight for the real title is half as good as the fight for the TV Title, this could steal the show.
Also on the card is former Featherweight Champion Mike Brown taking on Manny Gamburyan. A win for Brown can put him right back in the title picture while a win for Gamburyan wouldn’t do the same, but it would shoot him up the rankings.
Zuffa’s pulling out all the stops for this one. No Frank Mir in the both, Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan will have the call and Bruce Buffer will have the intros and decisions (and God willing Arianny will be cageside). WEC 48: Aldo Vs. Faber is live on pay-per-view this Saturday and with no Canuck conflict, it shouldn’t be too hard to watch at your local tavern.
