I’ll be honest, I didn’t have the highest expectations for this card cause outside the main event, there wasn’t really anything that interesting on paper. That’s the thing about MMA, it’ll surprise you and many times in a good way.
Britt Vs. Cavalcante
The night started off with a light heavyweight contest between Antwain “The Juggernaut” Britt vs. Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante. This was a striking battle all the way with Britt (at least looking like he was) living up to his nickname controlling the pace and rocking “Feijao” a couple times. The beginning of the end came when “Feijao” started clinching Britt against the fence, the ref broke it up, Britt got stunned by a looping right, and “Feijao” went in for the kill. “Feijao” gets the KO victory at 3:45 of the opening round.
No Arianny this week cause it’s not a UFC card so we’re ranking the fights out of Rockstar Girls. 2 Rockstar Girls out of 3 for a nice opening bout with an unexpected finish.
Gracie Vs. Randleman
The first round was a feeling out process between the two and considering the height deference, it was pretty expected. Nothing significant landed, but it wasn’t boring either. Both were throwing strikes, they just never found their range. The second round was a different story. Both fighters picked up the pace with Randleman landing a couple solid body shots and Gracie connecting on a flurry. It all went downhill for Randleman after he got rocked by a knee. Gracie pounced and tried for a side choke (arm triangle), Randleman escaped but gave him his back and Gracie went for a rear naked choke. Randleman did a good job defending but only for so long. Gracie wins by submission at 4:10 of round 2.
1.5 Rockstar Girls out of 3 and I’ll give it an extra .5 if Randleman promises to hang’em up right now. He had a good run, but he’s 3-10 since 2003 and got put to sleep pretty quick once Gracie locked in the choke.
Souza Vs. Villaseñor
This was an even back and forth bout through three rounds, but it didn’t start that way. “Jacaré” dominated the first round taking Villaseñor down at will getting to the mount early and dropping some bombs, throwing some devastating fists about mid-round from Villaseñor’s guard, and going for a kimura near the end. “Jacaré” started the second with the same pace and the same dominance but about halfway through, Villaseñor was able to turn the tide, land some good strikes, and stuff some takedowns. Villaseñor continued to control in the early part of the third with some more good striking and takedown defense. The tide changed again when “Jacaré” gutted-out a double leg and was able to keep Villaseñor on the ground for the majority of the round. With about a minute left the ref stood them up (which was a bit of an iffy call), Villaseñor went on the attack, but “Jacaré” was able to secure another takedown. “Jacaré” wins by unanimous decision.
2.5 out of 3 Rockstar Girls for several almost finishes and having a couple drastic changes in momentum.
Arlovski Vs. Silva
The big question going into this fight was, “How will Arlovski’s chin gonna hold up?” You can never say he’s got a glass chin again. He took a couple solid rights to the chin in the first round, weathered a storm in the second, and took a couple more good shots in the third and never went down. Now his hand speed and takedown defense is a totally different story. “Bigfoot” Silva dominated the mostly vertical affair with great boxing and good takedowns. Arlovski was supposed to have the better boxing skills going in but was too slow and kept dropping his hands after throwing shots. He did land some good leg kicks, but not often enough and a little too late in the fight. “Bigfoot” showed good hand speed, kept his hands up, and got Arlovski to the ground when he wanted (except for a pretty sorry shot in the second, but we’ll let that slide). “Bigfoot” Silva wins by a unanimous decision.
2 Rockstar Girls out of 3 for proving me (and many others) wrong about Arlovski’s chin.
Overeem Vs. Rogers – Heavyweight Title
This wasn’t even close. After a quick feeling out process, Overeem scored a (for the lack of a better term) takedown. Overeem really just sidestepped and pushed Rogers and he fell to the ground. Frank Shamrock called it a toss, but I wouldn’t give it that much credit. Overeem pounced and Rogers looked lost on his back just eating shot after shot. Overeem changed positions several times (I guess just for fun) and the end was inevitable. Overeem gets the TKO win at 3:40 of the very first round.
2.5 Rockstar Girls out of 5 for never letting me think the fight could go the other way.
Where does Overeem go from here? Logic would suggest he’d take on Fedor (well, the winner of Fedor-Werdum on June 26th but we know who’s winning that) but logic is never a good way to predict who Fedor (or Overeem for that matter) is fighting next.
