In the main event, we’ll finally see Alistair Overeem defend his Heavyweight Title for the first time since winning it almost three years ago against Brett “The Grim” Rogers. If you’re wondering, “Didn’t Brett Rogers get just get knocked out Fedor… badly?! Why does he get a title shot?” Well, do you really consider Overeem their champion? Yeah, he has the belt and yeah, this is a “title” match but considering the long absence and the signing of Fedor last year, we know who the real champion is. This is really more of a #1 contender match set for five rounds with the winner getting a leather and gold belt, but I wouldn’t call him “Champ”. Now if you’re wondering, “How can someone still be champion if he hasn’t defended it in almost three years?” Well, I don’t know either. Part of Overeem’s deal with Strikeforce is that it’s not exclusive and he can fight overseas and was given 2008 to do so, then he was supposed to have a title defense against Rogers last June, but it got called off after he injured his hand in a fight at a nightclub, then he was suppose to face Fabricio Werdum last August to defend the strap, but he pulled out again cause his hand wasn’t ready. A hand injury is a legitimate reason to call off a fight, but considering he’s fought seven times since the injury (3 times in MMA and 4 times in kickboxing), there’s something fishy going on. If you’re unfamiliar with Overeem (and more specifically the physique of Overeem), lets just say he’s gotten bigger (like a lot bigger) over the last five years. Now, he’s never tested positive for steroids (and I’m not saying he takes or has ever taken them) but it’s hard to ignore such a drastic change. Also, he’s only fought in North America three times in his career with the vast majority of his fights having been in Japan where they don’t test. Once again, I’m not saying he takes or has ever taken steroids, there’s just a cloud of suspicion that floats around him (or are those just his muscles?).
Also on the card is former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Glass Chin"... I mean "Pitbull” Arlovski versus Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. It’s hard to say how good Arlovski once was considering how watered down the UFC’s heavyweight division was when he was champion, so lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say he was very good… he ain’t that good no more. He’s been on the wrong end of a couple brutal knockouts in his last two fights and if Silva can just make good contact with Arlovski’s chin, well let’s just say “The Pitbull” better be glad Michael Vick’s not his trainer.
Stikeforce: Heavy Artillery is live on pay-per-view (Super Channel) this Saturday at 7pm. The UFC will of course be counterprogramming on Spike with a best of ’010 so far including “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung vs. Leonard “Bad Boy” Garcia from WEC 48, Shane Carwin vs. Frank Mir from UFC 111, and “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Mark Munoz vs. Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove and Terry Etim vs. Rafael dos Anjos from UFC 112.
