No MMA this weekend but there is boxing, though not the match everyone wanted to see. Floyd “Money” Mayweather will take on WBA Welterweight Champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. These two have (supposedly) been trying to get a fight together for over 10 years, but it’s boxing and boxing promoters seem to only get fights together 5 years after anyone cares. It finally came together after Mosley’s fight with Andre Berto to unify the WBC and WBA Welterweight Titles was cancelled because of the earthquake in Haiti this past January where Berto lost several family members and Mayweather had nothing going on cause his proposed fight with Manny Pacquiao fell through because of… well boxing promoter BS.

Golden Boy Productions went the whole nine for this one with the 24/7 series. “Sugar” played the likeable, down to earth face and “Money” played the Apollo Creed-like (and by “like” I mean to the 10th degree) heel… somewhere Vince McMahon is proud. Even though Mosley is the one with the checkered past and alleged steroid use and Mayweather is the one giving back to the community and trying to cleanup the sport, Mayweather always just comes off as such an ass. I guess it’s working for his cause he is the highest grossing prizefighter ever (and he’ll never let you forget it). One would argue (and I would) that people don’t pay to watch him fight; they pay hoping he gets knocked out. And let’s be honest, he’s a great fighter but he’s not the most exciting fighter ever. But once again, he’s doing something right. I don’t see him getting knocked out in this one, though. I see this going to a decision, me deciding that I’m not gonna watch Floyd Mayweather fight again until he fights Paquiao.

Oh, almost forgot! The Canucks and the Blackhawks play Game 1 tonight, so good luck finding a sports bar showing this fight in more than a small TV in the corner.
