UFC 115 lost it’s rumored co-main event yesterday when the on-again, off-again, on-again, postponed-again re-match between Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch was pushed back to UFC 117 (for now). It was never officially on the card cause Thiago Alves was waiting for medical clearance. Dana White said that they’re "making sure Alves is 1000 percent healthy," and with good reason. The fight was originally supposed to happen in December at UFC 107 but Alves had to pull out because of a knee injury. It was then set for UFC 111 in March, conveniently on the same pay-per-view as GSP’s fight with Dan Hardy nicely setting up a championship match with the winners of each bout. The fight didn’t happen because doctors found an abnormal connection between a vein and an artery in Alves’ brain during his pre fight CAT scan. He’s since had “minor” brain surgery to fix it (I’m not sure how minor brain surgery can be, but that’s what the UFC is calling it) and they though he’d be ready for Vancouver, but apparently not so much. This is gonna be a great fight and it’s a shame we won’t see it here, but I’m glad the fighter’s safety is being put ahead of everything else and let’s hope he’s better for Oakland in August. MMA (at least in North America) does a great job of keeping their fighter’s brains in good condition with pre fight CAT scans and mandatory medical suspensions if a fighter gets KO’d or takes significant damaged in a fight. It’s a lead that much “safer” sports like hockey and football should follow.
